Utility pipes carry service lines for electricity, cable television, telephones, fibre optics, street lights, storm drains, water mains, and wastewater. There are utility pipes that carry oil and gas lines, mass transits, road tunnels, and even communication lines for the national defence. All these pipes are made of different materials. Due to this, it entails different methods of locating them.
Locating pipes are necessary when doing a mid to large scale construction. Hitting and damaging these pipes during construction or excavations may cause service disruptions to a block, or a town. A Building Contractor must contact the local authorities for verification on the pipe locations. In cases where maps are inaccurate or non-existent, a private Contractor who has means in locating these utility pipes is the best choice.
For purposes of distinguishing them, utility pipes are colour coded. In some locations, there are convention marks that are painted on the streets to make known what type of pipe is below the ground.
